The Killer Section

Well, I know full well it is going to really hurt the legs anyway..to prepare us as much as possible, the organisers allow us to see the bike route for the big day to give us an idea of how hard it is going to be.

For someone like me, flat courses are the best because I am slightly on the heavy side for hilly bike routes. If you can sit through this, you'll instantly see, especially as the route goes up through the park, that this is a bike route for the lighter chaps. Still, I have been doing some hard hills on the fixed bike for a while now so will have to hope that the extra weight just means more power compared to these 60/70kg waifs. Unfortunately, most of the downhill sections seem short and steep so no real time to build up the chub advantage.

Here's the elevation map...

The water temperature is currently just under 20 degrees - if it stays the same, we will be in wetsuits.

However, if this goes over 22, we will be swimming in the, you guessed it, lycra!

Sorry...it's Lake Geneva

Rich - can you actually win this thing?

That may seem like a stupid question as I guess you wouldn't be entering if you couldn't, but how do your triathlon times compare to those of your competitors, and have you actually got any rivals who you race against quite lot who you'd love to beat?

Nice course by the way. Make sure you take your camera for some of the scenic shots!

Jonny, there is no way in the world that I will be coming home from Switzerland as the World Champion.

You have to remember that this is only going to be my 4th triathlon at this distance so there is going to be a lot of people there who have been doing this a lot longer than me, and also people who did not spend a large part of their life smoking etc.

My aim at this year's event is to simply finish as high up the British standings as possible. There are 18 of us going over for my age group and I qualified as the 18th fastest person (kind of). I think that a good race could put me in the top 10 of the GB lot - this is pretty much what I am hoping for.

Don't get me wrong though, I am not just going over for a little swim, bike and run. The whole thing will probably be the hardest 2 and a bit hours I have ever endured.

Still, I would imagine that on a course like this - the really top guys may come in just under the 2 hour mark and then I would be about 10 or so minutes behind them.

This year is mainly about experience and then once I hit the next age group next year (30-34), I can concentrate on trying to get to the top of that group during the 5 years that I am in it.

Now that sounds like a plan.

I forgot that you are a relative novice at all this, but looking at how far you've come on in the short space of time in your own age group, your goal to be the best 30-34 year old within 5 years could be a go-er.

So what happens after the race? Do you all go out on the slash together? Are you allowing yourself a pint or two, or is it back into preparation for the next race?

Yep, after the race we are all going out drinking in Switzerland for a couple of days..think that there may be a few people who are dying for a beer to be honest.

Once I get back to the UK though, I will probably rest for a week or so but then I will start doing a lot more running. I have the Bristol Half Marathon on the 17th of September, the Club Championship 10k pretty soon after that.

I am also going to be doing a London X Country leauge over the winter. Will still be swimming and cycling, but I really want to work on my running..want to try and get down to about 35/36 minutes on the 10k.

So you're running the Bristol half marathon? Chewie's entered that as well, although he hasn't actually started training yet. When is it, three weeks? Maybe you could run with him, as a sparring partner?

Yep, I am entered for that one. It is on the 17th of September. I wanna do about a 1:25...what is Chewie going for? If he wants to run with me, tell him I am a boring partner...I can't talk at all when I run!

I think Mark is trying to organise a trip to Croyde for some surfing - obviously I think that is a bad idea because I was hoping for a Bristol Massive lining the streets!
